Sledging in Cricket

Well, the final between India and Australia is stil acouple fo days away and we have Aussies at their old game of sledging again. Bhajji or Harbhajan is an "obnoxious weed" if they are to be believed and little bit to "unsettle' the other team is or its players is O.K. But one retaliatory word from the other side- kid Ishant for instance- is enough to flare up Ponting and his Symonds with charges of racial abuse with umpires-third fourth or whatever willing to impose fines, albeit on Indian players only. Is this the same Cricket, which was lauded as a gentlemen's game? Why does sledging become in integral part of it only in Australia? Are Indians prone to overreact or the Australians in need to be disciplined? Or is it just a storm in a tea-cup to raise the temperature a little and get spectators on the field?

Sledging as age-old as Austalian cricket! I have been to Australia a dozen times almost and observed that they lose no opportunity to hit our at friends or enemies sometimes with little or no provocation! It is as if in their culture. On cricket field, this tendency worsens since today's cricket has reached levels of war between teams. This is evident not only from sledging but also from the facial expressions of players of all teams. In any case, this should be discouraged by all concerened and suitably condemned.

Sledging looks fine.. what's cricket without high levels of alderlin and passion. And of course, all this adds to the entertainment value.

The thing that worries is the white vs. black skin battle in the functioning of ICC - the apex body of the game has to demonstrate balance. Both - Hayden getting away with his comment AND BCCI flexing its money power - seem to be incorrect and not in the best interest of the game.
